Chapter Eleven

“Where have you been?” Her mother’s tone wasn’t exactly accusatory, but it was clear she’d been worried.

Henla could sense that her dad wasn’t home, or had the scent of cinnamon and cloves from her mom’s cooking overshadowed his pipe stench? “I was with Kranor and Jude.” The giggle that escaped couldn’t be helped.

Her mom whipped off her apron and motioned that both sit at the large kitchen table. A beautiful bouquet of pink and red anomans sat in the center, and their wonderful scent reminded her of the lovemaking.

“Talk to me.”

She knew that phrase, and it wasn’t a good one. “There’s nothing to tell. I was working in the garden when they stopped by.”

Her mom’s brow rose at the parts she left out. “Wolf shifters, friends they may be, don’t just stop by. It was very dangerous for them to come here.”

She knew this was the reaction she’d get. “They didn’t come underground. It’s a free country. Anyone can hunt where they like.”

“Not if they want to live.”

She averted her gaze. Her mom’s warm hand caressed hers. “You care a lot for them. I can tell.”

She more than cared. She was falling in love with them. “Yes.”

“If they’re willing to risk their lives for you, fine, but be careful. You would feel horribly guilty for the rest of your life if one of them died for you.”

Her stomach churned and her muscles weakened. “Mom, that’s a terrible thought. I’ll be careful. I promise.”

“You know your dad and I support whatever decision you make, but the elders will not.”

That meant if, and it was a big if, she ever did want the blessing of marriage, she wouldn’t find it here. “Thanks. I’m going to my room.”

Why did love have to be so complicated? Kranor and Jude had saved lions and ostracized themselves in the process. That should count for something.
